President's Message - Garden Tasks and Our 2nd Show

by Joe Laundrie

The garden looks beautiful, and besides the deadheading, weeding, and overall maintenance there are task to keep your garden in top form and to prepare for the 2015 dahlia season. Go through your garden; pull out any dahlia plants that did not grow well or performed. If you love the flower on that dahlia that did not do well, obtain a healthy tuber for next year’s garden. Also check your tags! Make sure you have your dahlias labeled correctly.

This month's show will be held along with the LIDS Photo Competition, I encourage all of you to bring your blooms and enter your photos; it is a great way to show off your work and take pride in our club. I am looking forward to seeing you at our next meeting Thursday, October 16, which is after the show. --- Joe Laundrie, President

Photo Show and Competition Time

Saturday, October 11 and Sunday October 12, 2014

Our 2nd Dahlia Competition of the season will take place on Saturday, October 11 followed by the all day Exhibition on Sunday October 12. For new and established gardeners alike, there are many reasons to step up and be a part of this colorful event. The Novice table is available for anyone who has not previously won a prize in each Novice category; we had quite a lot of novices win ribbons. LIDS members will be on hand to help you stage your dahlias for the judges.

This second show features our photo show and competition as well, this is also a great time to display your beautiful dahlia photos, there are entry categories for beginners, advanced, and professional. View and download all of the details and rules for the competition on our website, or you will find brochures in the Wolkoff Garden.

Bring Blooms for the Competition!

All dahlia growers are welcome to enter their blooms in the competition, experienced and novices alike. We will have LIDS members on hand to assist anyone who brings blooms with the setting up and staging of the dahlias to enter in the competition. This is a great way to show off what you have grown. Not sure if you have what it takes? You do, just bring your best looking blooms, with at least one set of leaves showing and you will learn how to set up flowers for the show. It is easy, it is fun, and you may win a ribbon!

If you have blooms to donate for our arrangements , please bring them down as well! They are most appreciated, all of the blooms that are donated by generous growers like you are sold as arrangements to show visitors.

LIDS Dahlia Shows

Dahlia growers, whether expert or novice come from all points of New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts and even Rhode Island to display their gardening achievements, hoping to reach the prestigious Court of Honor. Because the cooler weather brings out their vibrant colors, these regional shows are held in September and October when Dahlias are at their peak. The shows are held in the lower level of the Carriage House at the Bayard Cutting Arboretum in August and October of this year.  See the calendar for dates.
