LIDS Newsletter - August 2014 |
President's Message - It's Show Time! by Joe Laundrie Our first show of the season is coming up on Saturday, August 30 and Sunday, September 1, 2014. This is the perfect time for LIDS members, new and experienced, to enter their blooms in the show. Are you new to entering dahlias for competition? We will have experienced volunteers on hand to guide you every step of the way. Come on down early on Saturday morning and join the group setting up their dahlias to present to the judges. There is a novice class for the newcomers. Our membership meeting this month will focus on dahlia competitions. You can bring flowers to the meeting and ask an expert any questions you may have. The meeting will aslo feature a demonstration on how to assemble dahlia baskets. Hope to see you at the meeting! Most important of all, is to GIVE IT A TRY! It is a lot of fun and the experienced growers are delighted to help the new entrants, it is a great way to show off your dahlias and to see hundreds of beautiful blooms. General Meeting Thursday, August 21, 2014, 7:00 PM Carriage House, Bayard Cutting Arboretum The Beautiful Picnic Day! LIDS 2014 Photo Show! by Dee Cunningham It's time to dust off those cameras! Though October seems far away, the Long Island Dahlia Society's Annual Photo Competition and Display is fast approaching. The Wolkoff Garden at the Bayard Cutting Arboretum is in full bloom already so come on down and click away. You can take pictures of your own dahlia blooms too! Watch for further details in the September LIDS newsletter. It's Show Time! It's Worth Repeating by Maureen Buford Saturday, August 30 and Sunday September 1 Our 70th Annual Dahlia Competition will take place on August 30th followed by the all day Exhibition on Sunday August 31st. For new and established gardeners alike, there are many reasons to step up and be a part of this colorful event. The Novice table is available for anyone who has not previously won a prize in each Novice category, what a thrill it is to be a winner for the first time. Conditions such as weather, travel, damage and etc. may keep the heavy hitters from entering, opening the way to a higher award for that special flower you have, but you "gotta be in it to win it." Finally, there are always friendly, experienced folks in the courtyard to help you groom and present your dahlia for the show table. 2014 could be your year, what are you waiting for?
