February/March Happenings |
Hello, LIDS Members! I know it's been a while. I had to get my nose fixed so I could smell the Spring flowers. I hope everyone had a great New Year's and Valentine's Day! As most members know, we are back at the Wolkoff Garden in the barn on Wednesdays and Saturdays, 8:30 AM to 11:30 AM The Dahlias are being taken out of cold storage each week, LIDS members will look them over for any signs of rot. Trimming and dividing the Dahlia tubers will also be ongoing when Joe Lysik, (our expert Garden Director) decides it is time. If you are a NEW member of LIDS, we welcome you! This time of year you can learn a lot about the Winter/Spring process of growing dahlias down at the "Barn," our hub of activity. The tubers have been stored and need to be checked. Even if you divided your stock at home, mildew and rot can creep in. If you catch it early you can save the tuber. Swab mildew with alcohol to remove, and use cinnamon or diatomaceous earth after you remove rot. In the coming weeks, Joe will let us know when the Greenhouse will go up and ask for volunteers to help. Work at the Wolkoff Garden picks up pace with Dahlias being potted up for started plants to go into the Wolkoff Garden and for all our sales from Spring into Summer.
Good & Welfare On behalf of the Long Island Dahlia Society I would like to say "thank you" to a very special LIDS Lady: Heather (Kelly) Abercrombie. Kelly got married in the Dahlia Garden on July 4th last year and will be moving out of state in the Spring. Kelly has been with LIDS for at least the past 14 years as our "Fundraising Chair." Her dedicated efforts with a smile at every 50/50, Gazebo, plant, and Show sale will always be remembered with love as we were truly lucky to have her with us all this time. Hopefully, Kelly will come down to the garden to say goodbye before she moves.
Reminder Spring Ahead is March 9th If you need a taste of spring before then, head on down to Hicks in Westbury. The 35th annual garden show starts March 6th-30th it's free. This year they will be swapping plants out with new plants so you can go back and see different scenes. 2025 Philadelphia Flower Show is always a delight. This year it's March 1-9 at the PA Convention Center. The theme is "Gardens of Tomorrow."
